Portrait of A Poet

Since it’s Throwback Thursday, I dusted off this little diddy that was written a few years ago…it’s also an ode to Allergy Season…you’ll see!

Portrait of a Poet

I could continue this ongoing fight, but what would I really gain
The way I see it, the true victory will only come when I lay down the weapons of battle

and start the peace talks all over again
This battle can easily be discontinued by letting the enemy know that I no longer believe in

or fear its power or lack thereof

How does one profess to being a writer when they are afraid to write?
Afraid of the venom that may leak out once pen meets paper
The fear of revealing one’s true thoughts, feelings, emotions, triumphs, failures, flaws, and character

can be very strong deterrents in achieving a career as a writer.

However, the flip side of this coin is that many have found great healing of some of these same ailments

just by simply voiding their souls onto a piece of paper and thereby

ridding themselves of these restless spirits to move forward to a more peaceful plane in their lives.

How is it possible to fear the one thing that I want most in life? Can I really be afraid of the exposure?

What will my writing truly reveal if I were to allow pen and paper to become the tools for which my soul uses for healing? Am I afraid of the revelations that the answers to these questions will bring?

This mirror is getting more and more difficult to look into.

It feels as though it’s spring and the weather is warm, the breeze is blowing just gentle enough

so that the curtains will dance a slow rhythmic waltz once the windows are opened.

The flowers are presenting their best colors and the world seems to be at peace with itself

and then I close my eyes and revel in nature’s symphony of new birth as the birds chirp in harmony.

I take a deep breath ready to inhale all the aromas of the earth and just when I begin

to feel the deep commune with God, Heaven and Nature

Random Rants Wednesday

I’ve decided to take a brief break from recognizing National Poetry Month to get a few things off my chest.  These are some random rants that are currently on my radar:

Michelle Obama dancing: So the First Lady of The United States of America shook her groove thang during the Easter Celebration at the White House this past weekend.  She had some fun on the Jimmy Fallon show with the return of the “Mom” dance, and she challenged Ellen to a little dance off.  Several Conservative outlets have taken this as an abomination of one of the most dignified positions in America.  One headline talked about the how the First Lady “disgraced” the title once again.  Another says: “First Lady dons stretch pants and shakes her rump.”  Really people!?!  Since when is it disgraceful, disgusting, and undignified to show how using dance can be a way to live healthy and feel better.  I didn’t see the First Lady twerking on a pole or wall, dropping it like it’s hot, or grinding on some sexy young backup dancer as can be seen on any social media outlet.  She was dancing a choreographed dance that incorporated simple moves that children and adults can do to get moving, feel good, and be healthy.  That’s the message!  So all of you stuck-up, pompous, high and mighty stuffed shirts who wouldn’t know a rhythm if it jumped down your throat need to find a new life and get over yourselves.  I think the lack of respect in the coverage of the First Lady is much more disrespectful than anything she has done to address childhood obesity.  Maybe if they caught a beat every now and then, they wouldn’t have time to sit on their plump rumps and criticize our First Lady’s moves! Another Cop Shooting: I’m sure you have seen or heard of the South Carolina officer who gunned down a 50-yr. old man during a traffic stop and decided to use the popular adage of: “I was in fear of my life!”  Well, why not?  It worked for those other guys so he figured that was all he needed as justification for shooting and killing an unarmed man running AWAY from him.  Then he proceeds to handcuff the man as he lies on the ground dying.  The precedence has been set, right?  So imagine his surprise when he gets hit with a murder charge and denied bond!  Rut ro…Hey it worked for those other guys!

Something a little more personal: Okay so I’ve been trying to change my diet and eat healthier to feel better and lose weight.  So, of course, I check the internet for the advice, recipes, nutrition, etc.  Well as expected there are any number of resources but what is boiling my blood is all of the contradictions.  Eat plenty of wheat and whole grains says one…stay away from wheat adds another.  Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables advises another especially bananas which are high in potassium and other nutritional benefits to help with depression, joint pain, and stamina….bananas will make you fat and bloated says another.  Eat plenty of fish like tuna and salmon says one article….tuna and salmon are high in mercury and should be avoided reads another article.  Fried foods in moderation is okay….fried foods are the devil!  I’m soooo confused…should I just suck air and drink water?  Of course not, because the air and water are polluted and I’ll die from cancer. What’s a girl to do?….DANCE!

Dance of a Child

Dance of a Child

The feet are light

The movements unpredictable

The joy undeniable in the dance of a child

Doesn’t matter the melody

The rhythm becomes the puppetmaster in the dance of a child

No heavy burdens to encumber the movement as the arms wave in the air in celebration of freedom

The freedom is the catalyst for the dance of a child

As we grow and life takes hold oh how we yearn for that carefree feeling

A feeling as elusive as a cool breeze on a balmy summer day

How wonderful it would be to throw off our garments of burdens and heaviness and be free

Even if only for a moment

How tolerable life would be

How sweet the moments of joy if we could just remember the dance of a child

The Confessional

Happy Good Friday! The following is my offering for this Resurrection Weekend!

The Confessional

Forgive me Father for I have sinned

Truer words never to be uttered as I slip into my little black box of honesty and peel back the curtain of my life

Forgive me Father for I have sinned

For the words of deception that so easily flow from my lips

Forgive me Father for I have sinned

For the many ways I have misused and abused the divine temple You gifted to me

Forgive me Father for I have sinned

For the hurt and anguish resulting from my selfishness and manipulations

Forgive me Father for I have sinned

For not acknowledging and appreciating the lives sacrificed for my convenience and liberty

Forgive me Father for I have sinned

For pridefully believing in my superiority while looking down on the sinful humanity of others

Forgive me Father for I have sinned

for vows and promises broken the very moment they were spoken

Forgive me Father for I have sinned

For not realizing my truth and identity, for attempting a life of deception of self, from self, and to self

Forgive me Father for I have sinned

for denying You and believing the fantasy so masterfully set before me

Forgive me Father for I have sinned

As I journey onto the path of true destiny paved with Your love and most of all forgiveness

Forgive me Father for I have sinned

Love Is…

I dedicate this poem to all of the parents who have autistic children and love them unconditionally.  Realizing the blessing in the midst of the struggle is a great gift.

Love Is…Breath and Life

It needs to be planted, watered, and nurtured to help it grow and keep it alive

Love is…Giving and Sacrificing

Open your heart to experience its joy, open your arms to offer all you have and receive all in return

Love is…Pain and Sadness

It cuts deep and hurts the most because it is part of your soul

Love is…Mental, Physical, and Spiritual

It encompasses your entire being and makes you whole

Love is…

The music always playing, the dance never stopping, the sun always shining even when it rains

Love is…Everlasting and Eternal

Love is LIFE

Until I sleep

In recognition of National Poetry Month, I will dust off some of my thoughts and share.  Enjoy or not..it’s up to you!

Until I sleep

The words clutter my dreams

swirl in my head

refusing to be silenced

demanding to be heard

they sing my sadness

shout my frustration

taunt me with my failures

play with my emotions

sleep evades me because they want to play

until pen meet paper and lets them be free

they need a stage

desire an audience

they perform to be made whole

then satisfied

they settle

until I sleep
